Yusufu Makuka is a professional teacher of Swahili. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and Marketing and has been teaching Swahili to non-native speakers for 5 years. Yusufu describes his teaching style as follows: "I usually talk to the students to get a feel for their level of knowledge and also to just figure out their personalities so as to know how to create and deliver my lessons. Materials I use include flash cards (which are one of the best ways to learn and remember new things), short stories and pictures which make lessons fun and are very easy to remember at the same time. I am interested in using various interactive methods for Swahili lessons including Communicative (Competence-based), Immersion, Task-based, Grammar, Audio-lingual approaches as well as reading and storytelling. I also use MP3 audio and video recordings for my students' supplementary purposes as well as pronunciation practice. I usually alternate between recordings and regular homework, as well as tests and pop quizzes, to ensure the student is keeping up."

to teach Swahili. We build relationships with my students because I know from experience that it takes more than just grammar lessons and vocabulary tests to really learn a language and to gain cultural understanding. An important part of each Swahili session is the time I take just to chat about our lives. I love to learn about my students, and i love to tell them about my interests and activities outside of the classroom as well.
