I’m Dr Sundaramoorthy Iyer Thuraisamy Sarma, a board certified Consultant General Surgeon and Head & Senior Lecturer at Department of Surgery and a Visiting Lecturer in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology of Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka wished to apply for the post of Senior Lecturer in Anatomy. As I’m very much interested in teaching Anatomy for Undergraduate and Postgraduate medical students, I feel that teaching anatomy is most suitable for me and will give me a good opportunity to be an enthusiastic academic staff of a most prestigious Medical School.

I have a long history of teaching Anatomy for undergraduate medical students and a couple of years of experience in teaching Anatomy for postgraduate students. Even before I passed out as a medical graduate in year 2003, I was teaching Anatomy for my junior colleagues in the Medical School. I was a student demonstrator at the Department of Anatomy, University of Jaffna for a period of six months in year 1998 and 1999. Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna which is one of the oldest Medical schools in the country, where Prof R Kanagasuntheram, an internationally renowned Professor of Anatomy, severed as the Professor of Anatomy and head of the Department of Anatomy after he retired from the National University of Singapore.

After graduated in 2003 I served as a demonstrator in the Department of Surgery for couple of months before starting my internship at National Hospital of Sri Lanka in October 2003. After the internship at Colombo I came back to Teaching Hospital, Jaffna as a medical officer and served as a Visiting Demonstrator in Anatomy for more than a year before I started postgraduate training in Surgery in October 2006. During this period I gave enormous support to the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna in following ways;
• Teaching of gross, microscopic developmental anatomy (embryology) and radiographic anatomy for undergraduate medical students (year 1 and 2).
• Organizing histology (microscopic anatomy) practicals and supervising medical students in Histology laboratory.
• Supervising and mentoring of medical students in dissection hall for dissections of Human cadavers.
• Organizing and supervising brain dissection program.
• Integrated teaching of Neuroanatomy with Neurophysiology and Clinical Neuroanatomy as Neuroscience.
• Teaching clinical anatomy.
• Prosecting Human cadavers for Anatomy Facilitations.
• Upgrading the Anatomy Museum of Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna.

As a visiting demonstrator in Anatomy I learned a lot about teaching, learning methods which actually gave me the stimulation to be an academic in the medical school later and meanwhile helped me to easily pass the postgraduate selection exam which is the assessment of basic science.

Postgraduate training of Surgery in Sri Lanka is an intense training programme which involves engagement at Teaching Hospitals in the major part of the training and gives a lot of teaching opportunities. Therefore, I got a plenty of opportunities to teach undergraduate medical students, postgraduate trainees in Surgery and Nursing students during my training period as a registrar in surgery before I got through my Doctor of Medicine (in General Surgery) in year2010.

After obtaining MD, I returned back to Jaffna with the intension to join to the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna as a senior lecturer. On the advices of my senior colleagues in surgery, I changed my mind and joined to the University of Jaffna as an academic staff in the Department of Surgery on 1st February, 2012 (which enabled me to teach anatomy, physiology and pathology in addition to surgery). From April 2010 to February 2012, I was serving as a Visiting Lecturer in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology. Even after joining the department of surgery, I’m continuously supporting the Department of Anatomy as a visiting lecturer as well as delivering clinical anatomy lectures to the students of Allied Health Science Unit of Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna.
Further, due to the interest in teaching I did a Postgraduate Certificate Course in Medical Education (PGCME) in year 2018 at Postgraduate Institute of Medicine of University of Colombo.

Apart from teaching I involve several activities of the Faculty of Medicine. I’m a member of the Faculty Board of Faculty of Medicine and also a member of the University Senate, representing the Medical Faculty. As a member of the Medical Education Unit of the faculty, I involve in the mentoring programme of the medical students and involve in the curriculum revision as well. I involved in revision and designing of curriculum in Anatomy, Pathology and Surgery of faculty of Medicine and Anatomy and Adult Health Nursing of Allied Science Unit.

I serve as an examiner for the first exam for medical degrees (first MBBS) in Anatomy and Physiology and second examination for medical degrees (second MBBS) in Pathology. I’m an examiner for Final MBBS examination in Surgery, not only in our University, but also in other state Universities of Sri Lanka like University of Colombo, University Kelaniya and University of Rajarata. I also contributing as an examiner in Applied Anatomy and Adult Health Nursing of Allied Science program.

Apart from undergraduate teaching I actively involve postgraduate teaching too. I used to organize postgraduate classes for medical officers who are preparing for selection exams in surgery (Basic Science). I’m a member of board of study in Surgery of Postgraduate Institute of Medicine of University of Colombo and a Board of study in General Surgery approved Trainer for Postgraduate Trainees (Registrar) in General Surgery. I involve in teaching, providing guidance & advice, conducting mock exams for the post graduates trainees (registrars). I’m a member of Postgraduate Institute of Medicine approved pool of examiners for Postgraduate Exams in Surgery (Selection Examination in MD Surgery – Basic Science (Anatomy) and served as an examiner for Anatomy since year 2016.
Being a trained surgeon and having exposed to most of the surgical disciplines, I find teaching anatomy more relevant and interesting. It is also find easier to emphasize the clinical relevance of learning anatomy and make the students enjoy the learning experience.
