Dear all,

I am excited about the opportunity to lend my knowledge, experience, and passion for teaching Arabic to non-native speakers.

I hold 23 years of experience as an elementary school Arabic teacher at international and American private schools. My approach centers on teaching Arabic in a fun and interactive way that allows students to explore and love the language, where I view student pleasure in learning as an educational necessity, not an educational luxury. My Ph.D. in Foundations of Education allows me to create this healthy positive learning environment based on a set of educational, psychological, social, and philosophical principles such as the responsive classroom approach. Being a part-time core curriculum professor at Jordan University alongside my Arabic teaching also informs and shapes my classroom approaches. I am also regularly invited to be interviewed on national TV as a guest educational expert consultant. Many of my interviews have centered on the intersection between globalization and education and multicultural approaches to teaching.

As an Arabic teacher, I have created guided reading materials for grades KG-5 totaling 2000 leveled books and related activity sheets that both monitor and encourage student learning and growth. Additionally, I authored a workbook to support the learning objectives and content of the national Jordanian curriculum for First Grade students as well as a scope and sequence curriculum for Kindergarten levels and First Grade. My experiences have also taught me that using applied phonetic principles is the most effective way to teach the Arabic alphabet to any individual.

For teaching Arabic as a second language, I focus on conversational approaches and tailoring vocabulary taught to student interests and needs. A combination of interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication approaches and especially important in teaching non-native speakers. My standards for evaluating student skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing welcome and encourage student challenges, confusion, and question formulation as a part of a continual and personalized learning process.

I believe what makes my teaching style unique would be the approach in which I instill vital skills into the children. To me, I value the child learning how to engage critically with learning material. This comes through teaching language as a skill that would be employed to enhance decision making and diversify thinking strategies. Through this I can teach the child the essentials of becoming a successful local and global advocate. This task of mine is accomplished through my elaborate daily, weekly, monthly and yearly lesson plans where I work with a team of likeminded individuals to ensure all our goals are met. Often, this plan must be altered due to the different paces that the children within my class learn. In such cases, I utilize placement tests to better tailor the material that I am teaching.

Further to this is my passion to keep the learning journey an ongoing process that continues outside of the classroom. This is done through my open communication with the children’s parents about the syllabus and the class’s goals.

Thank you for your consideration; I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely
Dr. Kholoud Khasawneh
