I am Dr. Manikesh Mishra, a dental clinician with a keen interest in academics and teaching.
My moment of revelation came while pursuing my Master’s degree in Dentistry, when I got the opportunity to teach students pursuing bachelor’s degree in dentistry. It was at this time I realised, there are a lot of students who think of dentistry as a more clinical driven branch and thereby ended up paying less importance to the theory behind it, especially the basic science subjects which they viewed as something less relevant to our practise in the future.
My interaction with them strengthened my belief in the saying “The eyes see only what the mind knows” and hence the importance of the basic science subjects as it enables you to thrive as a better clinician and a better student in the field of dentistry. This drove me into helping them outside of my lecture hours to understand the basics of the subjects better and how to apply them across subjects as well as translating the knowledge to their clinical practise.
I have almost 6 years’ experience of teaching bachelor students and 3 years of experience of teaching those pursuing masters in the field of Public Health Dentistry including research methodology, critical appraisal of literature, epidemiology, and biostatistics.
As an individual belonging to the field of Public Health, I am well versed with assessing the level of my pupils and tailoring a lesson plan suited to them so that they can learn at their own pace while making sure that they get a hold of the concepts better so that they have a more active approach to learning new subjects rather than the passive way of remembering everything that is thrown up at you.
For those pursuing a bachelor’s degree in dentistry, I can be approached for teaching all the subjects included in the syllabus, especially general anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, pathology, general medicine, and general surgery.
For those pursuing a master’s degree in Public Health Dentistry or having a keen interest in research my area of expertise includes Systematic reviews and meta-analysis, understanding study designs, effect sizes and their application to calculation of sample sizes, analysing data and interpretation of results for studies apart from the core topics of public health dentistry.
I am well versed with statistical analysis software such as SPSS, R, RevMan and reference management software such as Mendeley. I often assist with designing studies and analysing results for dissertation of students pursuing their masters in various disciplines outside of dentistry in medical subjects such as surgery, medicine, oncology etc.
