Physics is my passion. I worked at top branches of a reputed institute teaching Physics for IIT-JEE Advanced. The common shortcoming in physics pedagogy in general is delivering the mathematical part of it without necessary stress on the student's realization of the physical aspect involved. It goes without saying that many of the teachers don't even have a basic philosophical understanding neither of science nor of teaching for that matter.
Student should feel engaged and be part of the teaching discourse which needs to be driven by the teacher. In a typical classroom setting the teacher has hardly time for individual attention, which makes the child/student a passive observer of narration, without any challenge to participate. The experience would be dull and possibly a negative feedback for future engagement.
In my experience parents might find many willing tutors who are ready to teach but very few who are ready to take up doubts. Teaching is simple in a way, any literate can go through a standard book and repeat the same and become a tutor. But the essential quality of a good teacher would be to take any question/doubt from the student and at the same time encourage students to ask many more follow-up doubts.
Knowledge transfer happens in an atmosphere of fearlessness not in a hierarchical setup where typical teacher teaches monotonically and reprimands student from asking 'bad-doubt'. A 'bad-doubt' is a reflection on the inability of the teacher to explain.
Unfortunately with years of disciplined systematic schooling and incompetent teachers societies have reduced the students to passive listeners who dont discuss the science inside or outside the class. After years of being conditioned to be teacher-fearing, servile, silent, students have lost the most fundamental tool to learn, that is participation, debate and discussion. In my experience very rarely have I seen students approaching the teacher in high school for a doubt and that too with great hesitation.
Hope this changes!
