Hey there! 👋 I'm Shinjita, a geospatial researcher and PhD candidate who gets genuinely excited about maps, data, and our planet. Think of me as that person who can look at a forest and see not just trees, but layers of stories, numbers, and possibilities- all waiting to be mapped and understood.
For the past four years at RMIT, I've been deep in the world of spatial data: building 3D city models, automating maps with Python, and asking questions like, "Can we measure the value of a green view?" (Turns out, my PhD is all about that!). I’ve worked on projects tracking environmental changes, built toolkits for climate vulnerability, and even helped create a digital twin of a university campus - because why not map the future?
I live in the ArcGIS ecosystem (Pro, Enterprise, you name it), speak fluent Python and SQL, and love finding smarter ways to manage and visualize spatial data. Whether it’s designing a database, scripting a workflow, or turning raw data into a clear, compelling map, I’m all about making spatial analysis both robust and relatable.
But here’s what really motivates me: using these skills for something that matters. Lately, I’ve been diving into how spatial science can support sustainability- especially in areas like carbon tracking, forestry, and natural capital. The chance to apply my research skills and tech toolkit to real-world environmental challenges? That’s the dream.
I’m a curious, quick learner who loves collaborating with others (you should’ve seen my GIS workshops!), and I’m ready to bring my energy, detail-oriented mindset, and mapping magic to a team that’s making a difference. If you’re looking for someone who can bridge deep analysis with clear communication and a dash of passion for the planet, let’s chat!
Ready to map a better future together? 🌍✨
Experience
-
Tutor (Jul, 2021
–Present) at RMIT University, Melbourne
Delivered cloud-based GIS and data analysis modules using QGIS, Google Earth Engine, Postgres database and SQL.
Guided over 30 students per semester in structured data collection, quality assessment, and project delivery.
Supported database management and introduced workflows for real-time system updates and visualisation.
Prepared and maintained training materials, improving accuracy and consistency in data interpretation.
-
Research Associate (Jul, 2021
–Present) at RMIT University
Developed and managed spatial models and databases for large-scale environmental sustainability research, integrating diverse datasets (land cover, vegetation, infrastructure).
Automated GIS workflows using Python to improve data processing efficiency and reliability for ongoing research projects.
Created precise, publication-quality spatial analyses and maps, demonstrating ability to produce fit-for-purpose visualisations for technical and non-technical audiences.
Collaborated with external partners (e.g., AURIN, local councils), showcasing strong stakeholder engagement and ability to deliver data-driven project outcomes.
Selected Project Highlights:
AURIN Heat Vulnerability Toolkit: Built an automated GIS model for analysing environmental exposure, directly transferable to modelling carbon sequestration or biodiversity hotspots.
COVID-19 Environmental Impact Study: Applied remote sensing and spatial analysis (Google Earth Engine) to monitor changes in vegetation and air quality-methodologies applicable to forest health and carbon stock monitoring.
RMIT Metaverse Project: Constructed complex 3D digital twin models using CityEngine and ArcGIS Pro, demonstrating advanced skills in spatial data integration and system interoperability valuable for landscape-level visualisation.
