Kulbir channi Hindustani vocal music teacher
6 Reviews

My name is Kulbir Channi, and Hindustani vocal music has been the centre of my life for more than forty years. Music, for me, is a form of meditation that connects a person to their own soul, and this is the spirit I bring into every class I teach.

I belong to the Banaras gharana and have trained in both Hindustani classical and light music since early childhood, beginning formal lessons at the age of four and never looking back. Over the years, I have grown as a professional singer, performer and teacher, while staying a devoted student of music myself.

What I teach
In my classes, students can learn a wide range of forms built on a strong classical base:

Basic Hindustani classical, beginning with alankars and foundational voice training.

Ragas such as Bhairav, Bhairavi, Yaman, Bhopali, Vrindavani Sarang, Bhimpalasi, Kedar, Kamod, Basant, Chayanat and many others.

Classic Bollywood songs rooted in raga-based compositions.

Bhajans, Gurbani shabads, ghazals and Punjabi folk songs.

Thumri and light classical pieces.

Sanskrit shlokas, which I can also set and compose in suitable ragas.

Students of all ages are welcome, from young beginners to adults who are starting afresh or returning to music after many years.

Education and training
My formal education combines university degrees with traditional music training. I completed my B.A. and M.A. from D.A.V. College, HNB Garhwal University, alongside dedicated music study. I hold Sangeet Prabhakar (vocal) from Durga Sangeet Vidyalaya, Allahabad, under the Prayag Sangeet Samiti.

Throughout school and college I was consistently among the best performers in my class, actively taking part in cultural programmes and competitions and deepening my understanding of both classical and light music.

Teaching style

A typical class with me begins with Saraswati Vandana to create a focused and respectful atmosphere for learning. I work patiently on building a strong foundation in sur, taal and voice culture, especially in the early stages. Concepts are introduced step by step: starting with alankars and basic exercises on harmonium, moving gradually into ragas, bandishes and then songs.

I am comfortable working with very young children as well as adults and make sure each student progresses at a pace that suits them. I provide written theory notes to support practical learning and expect regular practice and dedication in return.

Performances, honours and experience

I began performing at the age of twelve, with my first programme at the Surveyor General’s Office, Survey of India. Since then, I have:

Presented music programmes on All India Radio, Najibabad (from 1984 onwards).

Performed on All India Radio, New Delhi (from 1994 onwards).

Given numerous religious and devotional music programmes on Doordarshan, Dehradun.

Been associated with Vishva Jagriti Mission for four years, contributing musically to its events.

My work has been recognised with several honours, including:

Felicitation by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on two occasions (2013 and 2015).

Bhushan award from Himalaya and Hindustan.

Recognition from Citizens Welfare Society, Saharanpur.

As a teacher, I have taught more than 100 students individually and many more in groups, ranging from Class 1 children to learners above 50 years, from absolute beginners to advanced students. I have prepared choirs and handled school music in several reputed institutions, including:

I have also been invited to judge various school and college‑level music competitions.

Very calm and patient...

Have been learning singing with Ms Kulbir from last one year. I am a mature student from UK, she is very accommodative and patient teacher. I started from beginner level and really please with how much I have learned so far. I can see that my understanding of the music has increased and so has my vocal range. I started with alankar and slowly moved to Bhajan, bollywood, ghazals and thumri. She has excellent knowledge on different singing style. Right now I am learning different raagas which I am enjoying thoroughly. Overall excellent teacher with lots of patient.

Music lesson with Kulbir

I am a mature student from UK and taking my music lessons with Kulbir on Skype for past three months.
I am learning singing Bhajans, Old Bollywood songs and Harmonica.
Kulbir is well experienced and talented teacher. I started from very beginner's level and me being a mature age, it took me a while to learn basic skills but Kulbir has shown tremendous patience and passion towards me . She has taught me things very politely and with great enthusiasm.
I am very happy with my progress and would definitely recommend Kulbir for music lessons.

She is a great teacher and very patient and teaches everything clearly. I am really glad that I came across her on teachron and got to learn from her and I enjoy my lessons very much. After every lesson she sends me written notes of what we have covered in the class and they are helpful to review. I would recommend her to anyone wanting to learn singing because she makes the lessons enjoyable and you learn a lot in each lesson.
