My educational philosophy is anchored in the belief that every student has the potential to become proficient, and even excel, in mathematical reasoning and problem-solving. As a dedicated educator, my approach is driven by a commitment to cultivating a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, fostering critical thinking skills, and instilling a passion for the beauty and relevance of mathematics regardless of your prior experience in the topic being studied.
In my teaching I employ a blended approach between direct instruction and the use of Worked Examples as well as student-led inquiry-based approaches when appropriate. I recognise that each student possesses a unique learning style and mathematical background. Therefore, I strive to create a differentiated learning environment that accommodates diverse learning needs, allowing students to progress at their own pace while providing ample opportunities for further exploration and use of retrieval practice to engage student’s long-term memory.
The integration of real-world applications is a cornerstone of my teaching philosophy. I firmly believe that connecting mathematical concepts to practical scenarios enhances students' understanding and appreciation of the subject. By incorporating relevant examples from various fields, I aim to demonstrate the applicability of mathematics in solving everyday problems. Having taught in IGCSE, IB and A-Level programmes, each has their own assessment objectives but I believe that as well as examinations and certificates, students should be prepared for challenges faced in the real world and employing strategies to solve problems that do not yet exist.
Technology is embraced as a powerful tool to enhance the learning experience for students. Whether through interactive simulations, virtual manipulatives, or data analysis tools, technology serves to illustrate abstract concepts and engage students in dynamic, hands-on learning experiences. Particularly, I use websites such as Desmos, Geogebra and Mathigon for students to visualise and make connections between key concepts when needed. Additionally, I strive to develop students' digital literacy skills, preparing them for the data-driven landscape of the 21st century. The use of personalised learning platforms such as DrFrostMaths, MyiMaths and Hegarty Maths also provide opportunities to instil a level of responsibility for students to manage their own learning progress and metacognitive skills outside of the classroom to reflect upon their understanding outside of the classroom.
As a teacher and tutor I am dedicated, organised and diligent to my students needs with preparations made to ensure that they will not only succeed in assessments and examinations but enjoy mathematics.
