This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts and applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing technologies. Students will learn how GIS integrates hardware, software, and data to capture, store, analyze, and visualize geographic information. The course explores basic principles of spatial data management, map projections, coordinate systems, and spatial analysis.
In the Remote Sensing component, students will discover how satellite and aerial imagery is acquired, processed, and interpreted to study Earth's surface features. The course covers electromagnetic radiation principles, various sensor types, image interpretation techniques, and the integration of remote sensing data with GIS for environmental monitoring, urban planning, natural resource management, and disaster assessment.
Through hands-on exercises and practical applications, students will develop essential skills in industry-standard GIS software and learn to process satellite imagery. By the end of the course, students will understand how these powerful technologies work together to solve real-world spatial problems and support decision-making across various fields, including environmental science, urban planning, agriculture, and natural resource management.
