I started teaching in secondary and high schools, concentrating on physics and chemistry. These years were very special because I had the opportunity to develop the techniques for teaching and to interact with students at an important time in their lives. I remember when students would show growth and excitement in science, and it was during this time I realized I was passionate about education.
After some time teaching secondary school, I decided to transition and became a tutor at the University of Buea, in the Faculty of Science. The last few years I have been involved with adjunct tutoring a few courses, including BIO201, CHM201, MLT201, ZOO201, CHM242, PHY220, PHY218, MLT202, ZOO202, and BCH301, and my background in the natural sciences also offered a unique interdisciplinary teaching approach, combining physics, chemistry, and biology. The value of linking natural science disciplines together to aid not only understanding of the concepts but also helping them to see how each discipline is interrelated in nature was really effective. I think that by providing experiences in science (real-world connections) and facilitating critical thinking, it ultimately led to an accessible and engaging topic of study.
Besides teaching lecture courses, I also had the opportunity to work with students on a much more personal basis through research projects and by providing guidance and support. One of the Faculty of Science's mandates is to promote interest in natural science under the context of scientific inquiry and innovation. I have seen my students move on to successful careers in science and research and add to our collective repertoire of reputable achievements in the faculty.
As I considered these years as an academic at the University of Buea, all of which have also been supported by faculty members and staff, I am really pleased that I have connected with students and contributed to developing their interests and motivation during their academic journey of lifelong learning in developing science-related thinking and skills that extend beyond the Johnny-come-lately scholastic viewpoint to prospective academic pillars in research and the global scientific community.
