There are many things to learn when it comes to learning the holy Qur'an. Reciting correctly is the priority number one for reasons, and learning Tajweed helps to the cause.
I like to show my students rules of Tajweed through recitation of the surahs or ayats so they can relate.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "He who does not memorize any part from the Qur'an he is like the ruined house.''
Memorising some surahs from the Qur'an correctly (if not the whole) is also necessary to perform Salah.
I try to make sure that my students can recite and memorise 5 to 11 surahs correctly, to be able to perform Salah.
I can tell from my 10 years of teaching experience, anybody can get there within 20 to 25 weeks, if commited. And then there is no limit from there.
