Teaching methodology is about knowing the subject matter that a person is going to teach. They must know the subject very well, so well that they can break the pieces down into small enough units that students can engage with the information and the skills in ways that allow them to progress onward to higher-level problem solving.
How do you teach someone to begin to understand the subject field? How do you introduce it in a way that makes it accessible to them? How do you capture and sustain their interest in the subject? How do you lead them to the point at which they begin taking over their learning and skill development for themselves?
Methodology classes provide student teachers with examples of ways to do those things along and allowing them to test the methods for themselves. Brain-based learning has taken center stage in this field, and that means the methods have been designed and tested for best practices in that field.
More and more, the focus has become how to lead students to understand how to think and act like a professional practitioner in the subject matter. How do scientists look at problem solving in the sciences? How do writers approach the task of writing well? Rather than constantly feeling like outsiders looking in, students are taken behind the scenes where they are provided with multiple approaches to problem solving in their chosen field of study.
Methodology also offers alternatives to the formal lecture approach that more traditional teachers preferred to practice. It shows teachers how they can adapt the curriculum in ways that make it accessible for students with special needs or learning disabilities, or even language deficits. For those who have not encountered those issues in their own experience or observed them in others, the methodology classes provide them with the support they’ll need to survive in the classroom.
