As a teacher based in mathematics. I mostly us good learner centered teaching style where learners will best explains best way to understand mathematics. This is a proven style and it worked for us in these years. In most cases we use question and answer as a way to probe learners their understanding. Print out will also be used as a way to test learner's cognitive understanding. Learner to tutor learning style helps to gather most important issues to be taught. I mostly guide my learners on issues about carries and extre curricular.
