First I begin by assessing the student's level of knowledge, especially in reading and critical writing. Self study is very important, and I believe it allows students to retain information much better than other methods. My teaching style uses this, and I want the student to think and reach the answer. I do not believe in "parrot" style learning. My teaching style has allowed students in a bachelor's program of psychology to reach good grades in their module, and ultimately get distinctions.
Quizzes and small fun assignments like Kahoot are a good way to engage students! I use such techniques, but also expect students to do their reading before the class, and come prepared. I am always happy to assist with questions and doubts, but expect the student to try first.
I like to use real-life examples to explain concepts, and like to ask the student to be creative and imaginative as well! I believe it is always good to apply concepts to our lives when learning, so they are not just theories.
