I currently work with a group of boys ages 7-9 to improve their readkng skills. Improvement was seen within 2 months. I use repetition and constant practice, allowing them to pronounce and make the effort to determine what level of assistance is required. Focus on making the child comfortable to be able to read without fear of being judged or criticized. Positive reinforcements are used which has proven successful as the boys are quite eager to come to their sessions even asking for more time as they continue to enjoy the time. Make reading fun and exciting. Allow them to tell you stories in relation to the current lesson to help them better relate which also helps them. I also worked with special needs children to help them believe in themselves. By promoting this positivity the children are able to improve their self esteem and awareness allowing them to want to be a part of the lesson. Not all children enjoy the team work. You need to be aware of what works for the child be it individual or group sessions.
