Contextual Learning: I believe that a concept is only truly understood when you can see its real-world application. My background as a marine engineer allows me to bring topics like physics, fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics to life with tangible examples. Instead of just a formula for engine efficiency, we'll discuss how that formula dictates fuel consumption on a multi-million-dollar cargo ship. I use anecdotes and case studies from my time at sea to show students why these subjects matter and how they are essential to the world around them.
Systems Thinking: My MBA in MIS and PGD in LSCM taught me that no single component works in isolation. Everything is part of a larger system. I apply this thinking to my lessons by helping students connect the dots between different subjects. We might explore how a mechanical failure (engineering) on a ship impacts its delivery schedule (logistics), and how real-time data analysis (MIS) can prevent such an event. This approach helps students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing them for the interconnected challenges of the real world.
Active Problem-Solving: I'm not here to give you all the answers. My role is to provide you with the tools to find them yourself. I use hands-on, project-based assignments that challenge students to apply what they've learned to new scenarios. Whether it's a small-scale engineering design project or a data analysis challenge, my goal is to foster an environment where students actively engage with the material. This method builds confidence and teaches students to think independently, skills that are invaluable in any career.
What Makes Me a Great Teacher My unique professional journey has given me several key attributes that set my teaching apart:
I Bridge the Theory-Practice Gap: Many educators can teach theory, but few can explain it with the authority of someone who has used it to operate a massive piece of machinery. My experience allows me to illustrate complex concepts with concrete examples, making them more accessible and memorable for students. I can answer the perennial student question, "When will I ever use this?" with confidence and compelling stories.
I Teach Real-World Relevance: My background gives me credibility. Students and parents trust that I am teaching not just from a textbook, but from a place of deep, practical understanding. This motivates students and shows them the genuine value of their education. I can highlight the specific career paths and opportunities that a strong grasp of these subjects can open up, from engineering and technology to logistics and business management.
I Am a Mentor, Not Just a Teacher: My experience in diverse professional settings has taught me to mentor and guide individuals toward success. My goal is to do more than help students pass a test; I want to instill in them a lifelong curiosity, a strong work ethic, and a strategic mindset that will serve them well in their academic and future professional lives. I teach them not just what to know, but how to think.
