I am a Filipino who can speak Chinese and have five years of experience living abroad studying Mandarin and Psychology. I hold a Level 5 Chinese Proficiency Certificate and an Advanced Chinese Speaking Proficiency Certificate.

Mandarin is a very difficult language to learn, so choosing the right teaching style is crucial to achieving both the learner’s goals and the learning objectives. As someone who started with zero knowledge of Mandarin, what really helped me was the facilitator teaching style, where I learned by actively applying what I’ve learned. In addition, incorporating other styles—such as the delegator style—can be an effective way to support long-term retention.

Ultimately, teaching should not be based solely on which style to use, but on how the student can best understand and absorb what they are learning. Therefore, a teacher must know their students well, including their current level and mental readiness to learn.
