Teaching gives me great satisfaction. What transpired as a challenging role to train investment bankers in my first role with Citigroup in 2007-08 has now snowballed into training university students and finance professionals in various subjects such as Derivatives, Equity Analysis, Fixed Income, Financial Modeling, Investment Banking, Private Equity, CFA exams and other university-based subjects.

Indeed, my focus has been on variety of topics and Corporate Finance, Derivatives, Fixed Income, Investments have always been imbibed at the forefront of such topics. Whether I was lecturing for Concordia University for their MBA Program or lecturing at Schulich’s MFIN program or Queen’s Undergraduate Program where I conduct specialized bootcamps training session, I focus on financial models, regression analysis, optionality in valuation etc among other things.

A true leader creates leaders not followers and I follow the word to the tee. That also means, when I train students, I see them as my learning partners. Once they too realize that, every session, every class, every semester from then becomes an interactive one rather than a monologue.

My ideology of teaching is to ensure students take the subject forward. I try to instill an organic method of learning so that they never memorize a concept but understand it intuitively. I teach a lot of analytical based topics related to Investment Analysis, Derivatives, Financial Management, Accounting, Financial Ratios, Hypothesis testing, Modeling, Portfolio Management etc. Every possible detail in those topics has been taught purely by logic rather than stressing on memorization.

Students are my true focus and I welcome questions from them, mainly for two reasons. One: it gives me a sense of direction and helps me to know what my audience is thinking and two, as they ask they react and that makes them involved in the topic.

My mantra is also to be prepared. I always create a blueprint for the class and explain concepts in a simple relatable way. Some of my best lectures have been the ones where both students and I have interacted, improved upon the content and simultaneously moved forward in our curriculum. They would have solved complex mathematical problems without even realizing that.

Lastly, my main goal has been to “leave no student behind”. I strongly believe that each student has a unique ability. While I agree some may need a bit more encouragement, from personal experience I know that when pushed in the right directions those students excel beyond their own capabilities.

Isn’t that what teaching truly is? To provide an outlet for students to exchange ideas and innovate for their own betterment.
