My schooling and college education played a pivotal role in shaping my future. I had excellent facilities and faculty, which laid emphasis on fundamentals.
This fired my interest in academics and research and thus I have worked consistently towards this goal, with distinctions in my school exams and a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry from the Nair Medical College, University of Mumbai, India. I am now looking forward to do a Ph.D. and sense that the experiences in my life have been so far instrumental in getting me equipped to embark on this venture.
Firstly, the 5 Years’ of study program in Biochemistry had taught me to analyse various biological topics relevant to a problem systematically.
The comprehensive study that I undertook taught me both theoretical and practical aspects of a variety of life science subjects such as molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, microbiology, and genetics.
During this course I have pursued many projects, drawing upon the knowledge and skills that I acquired through classroom teaching as well as extensive practical training.
Among the projects that I undertook, the work I did on Homocysteine and its relation with Atherosclerosis has been the most fascinating.
This project was a part of my dissertation that I accomplished under the guidance of Dr. Alka V. Nerurkar, Dept. of Biochemistry, Nair Medical College, Mumbai, India. In this project, I established a functional relation between the Homocysteine and Atherosclerosis.
Previous to this exertion, I got a chance for the prestigious R.G. Kar Medical College, Kolkata. As a result I had the good opportunity to work under the guidance of Dr. Ila Bhattacharjee, Department of Biochemistry, R.G. Kar Medical College, Kolkata, India.
In this project I worked on the biochemical aspects of lipid profiles and its implications. It abetted me to understand the enzyme action involved in the metabolic pathway. I used to determine the biochemical parameters.
Another enlightening project that I undertook while at Bharat Sevasram Sangha were “Correlation between fasting blood glucose level and glycosylated haemoglobin in Type II Diabetic patients in Kakdwip Area”
After completing my Master’s degree in 2013, I decided to join the Biochemistry Industry to acquire a perspective on how biological parameters are assessed and the reports are administered to patients. I was blessed enough to work as a laboratory executive in the biochemistry department, at Thyrocare Technologies Limited, Juinagar, Navi Mumbai, India from January 2014-February 2015.
Here I worked on various biochemical assays ranging from biochemistry to flow cytometry to evaluate the patient samples. Presently I am working at Bharat Sevasram Sangha, Kakdwip, West Bengal, India . My work here involves laboratory operations ; and the development of ELISA based techniques .
I also had the noble opportunity to study the various aspects of human health in relation to biochemical diseases. This has helped me to understand the physiology of metabolic disorders and the various factors which play a critical role in aiding/inhibiting its action.
Apart from technical skills, I have always been an active student. The various extra-curricular activities offered by my college sharpened other essential skills in me. I was part of the organizing committee for my college cultural fest at Nair Medical College, Mumbai.
Being associated with Bharat Sevasram Sangha, I got an opportunity to teach students. I found this different experience really fascinating. I have also had the privilege of teaching underprivileged children. Along with all this, I have learnt to speak four languages and can write in three of them. My other interests include travelling, painting, music, cooking and reading.
