Graduated from the UK with M.Sc. Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering and around 7 years of teaching experience in UAE Universities in core courses including Material Science, Strength of Materials, Manufacturing Processes, HVAC, Thermodynamics, Machine Design, Quality Management, Engineering Ethics & Economics, Statics, Dynamics, Reliability, and HSE.
For the majority of my non-technical major students, the semester spent in my classroom will be their first and last experience doing engineering. Yet, these students will have to make decisions about real issues. I want my students to leave my classroom with broad engineering skills that enable them to engage these ideas and develop creative thinking and innovation. How do I do this? I start with a complex, yet relevant, idea such as whether renewable energy like solar can be used to counter global energy requirements. I gather students’ initial ideas about why machines need energy and how to do them convert that into work.
I then challenge them to discuss the questions in pairs and explain their answers to one another. A second poll of answers demonstrates how students’ ideas have changed, and allows me to correct misconceptions and assess their understanding of basic engineering concepts.
The crucial final stage in this discussion is that of developing experiments to test their ideas. This is the crux of how science & technology are impactful. Traditionally, there has been a major discrepancy between how we do engineering and how we teach it.
