My name is Shona and I am an experienced, CELTA qualified English teacher from the UK. I have previously taught students from ages 4 – 44, from basic phonics all the way up to advanced essay writing + IELTS exam preparation.

Due to Covid-19, I now have ample experience in teaching online as well as in the classroom. I have been teaching on MS Teams, Zoom and Google Classroom for the past year, and have now perfected the methods used so that the lessons are just as, if not more, beneficial online as they are offline.

I have a passion for teaching, and I am extremely enthusiastic when it comes to the progress of my students as well as my teacher development. I am constantly looking for ways to advance my teaching skills and further grow my abilities.

Experience

  • English Teacher (Aug, 2021–Dec, 2021) at Doan Thi Diem Secondary School
    Here, I teach ESL + English literature to grades 6 - 8 following the On Screen books with classes of up to 35 students. I teach levels A1 – B1 speaking + presentation skills, and A2 writing, listening + speaking skills. I am responsible for planning and delivering up to 10 different class types per week, assigning and grading homework, and writing routine progress reports.
    Due to Covid 19, this role has been entirely online and thus I have ample experience of using online platforms and resources.
  • IELTS Teacher (Speaking and Writing) (Jun, 2021–Dec, 2021) at English Enlightening Center
    I taught IELTS speaking and writing skills to grade 11s of band 5.0-7.0. I planned all my lessons based on the Mindset books, making sure to teach the lexical resource and structures needed not only to pass the IELTS, but achieve a high band score. As well as lessons focused on the skills needed to pass – I also give mock exams, meaning I am responsible for the grading. I have spent countless hours self-studying how to achieve a 9.0 and the best teaching methods for lower level IELTS, as it is the area of teaching I am most passionate
    about.
  • Language Arts Teacher (Jan, 2021–Jun, 2021) at Hanoi Adelaide School
    At this bilingual school, I was responsible for teaching English, Math and Science, amongst many other skills such as giving presentations and project based learning to grade 3-5.
    As a Language Arts Teacher, my responsibilities included; planning and performing the lesson, submitting lesson plans, distributing + marking tests every 3 weeks, writing frequent progress reports, creating differentiated worksheets and classroom activities, meeting with parents, and acting examiner for admissions.

    This role encouraged creative freedom in the classroom, meaning I got the chance to use a wide variety of activities and methods, such as role-play activities, script writing + performing, science experiments and much more. Due to the small class sizes (15-20) and teaching my students every day, I was able to monitor their progress and create differentiated classrooms for each individual student’s needs.
  • English Teacher (May, 2019–Nov, 2020) at Helios English Academy
    At this Korean English academy, I taught children of ages 4 – 16 in classrooms of maximum 6 students. The small class sizes allowed me to make my lessons very student centered, and I could focus on each student’s strengths and weaknesses and adapt the lesson so that it was most effective for each child’s needs.
    This role allowed me to gain experience in teaching phonics, reading, writing, speaking and grammar to students of various levels, ranging from complete beginners to B2. For the older students who were in high school, I also had lessons dedicated to IELTS, advanced essay writing, and debating.
