I am Dr. Fayaz A. Sofi, Assistant Professor in Department of Civil Engineering at National Institute of Technology Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. I specialize in Structural Engineering and teach core courses including Structural Analysis (basic, intermediate and advanced courses), Engineering Mechanics, Finite Element Analysis, Bridge Engineering, Steel Design (Basic and Advanced), etc. My research is focused on finite element analysis of Structures using ANSYS (APDL); bridge engineering (steel girder bridges); hybrid double-skin tubular columns (behavior and mechanics); machine learning applications in civil engineering.
Prior to joining academic, I have worked in construction industry for about 6-years and have executed building projects, including both design and construction.
I welcome students to reach me for any help in any of my expertise teaching, research and professional experience areas.

  • Graduate Research / Teaching Assistant (Jan, 2014Dec, 2017) at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE, USA
As Teaching Assistant (TA), I was associated with teaching of Structural Analysis courses at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, NE (USA). I conducted classes for B.S. (Civil Engineering) students. In addition, performed my Ph.D. research on composite Steel girder bridges using ANSYS (APDL) computational Finite element software.
  • Assistant Executive Engineer (Project Manager) (Jan, 2008Dec, 2013) at Public Works Department, Government of Jammu and Kashmir
Executed construction of building construction projects and supervised multi-discipline teams from inception to completion. Prepared detailed project reports, bill of quantities for work tenders and contractor bill settlements. Collaborated with clients, designers and Architectural engineers on projects to arrive at mutually beneficial decisions.
  • Design Engineer (Material Application Lab.) (Jun, 2006Jul, 2007) at General Electric Bangalore
Performed CAE finite element analysis for Thermoplastic (PC/PBT - Polycarbonate/ Polybutylene Terephthalate) material for Vehicle Energy Absorbers. Performed nonlinear finite element analysis of energy absorbers for vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to pedestrian impacts to meet automotive regulations, and performed crashworthy impact simulations in LS-DYNA.
