I have taught intermediate English in my college, as well as SAT Math and SAT English in my A-level.
The best teaching methodolgy is to first understand what level is a student at. Then, draft a schedule with him/her so that it caters to both of you.
If that works well, sky is the limit then.
Moreover, quizzes in the most creative forms can be a good source of help. For instance, for SAT English, we could read an academic level Wall street journal together and point out the gist of the essays.
English can also be taught very well if we specifically dedicate the second-half of the lesson. increasing the confidence of the student to speak well without any hesitation. This can be done adequately by engaging in role-plays.
