I am deeply invested in making sure that learning philosophy does not become a cumbersome activity. I am patient with students and try to root the ideas in the textbook in our day to day experience. Learning philosophy can become a cumbersome activity if we don't engage with the text in an honest manner. Most of the difficulties people face in understanding the subject comes from being confused by the style in which philosophy is written. The first thing I try to do with students is to help them understand this style of writing.
I also focus on teaching how to articulate ideas on the page with clarity and precision. One of the most important tools for a philosopher is the ability to express an idea with clarity. No understanding or learning of philosophy is complete without it. I like to focus a part of the class on how ideas on the page could be rephrased or articulated better. This process, I find, helps students when they have to express their own ideas in the future.
